Monaco's eco-friendly beaches
Monaco Plage Propre campaign is launched for a 7th year
The official website of the mayor of Monaco has once again announced the summer Monaco Plage Propre campaign - 'Monaco Beach Clean'.
In partnership with the Tourism and Convention Authority and the Monegasque Sanitation, the mayor of Monaco decided to repeat the summer operation "Monaco Beach Clean" which began on Saturday 18th June 2016. It aims to educate smokers in maintaining the cleanliness and quality of the beaches by offering free ashtrays, avoiding cigarette butts in the sand.
These ashtrays will be available in self-service display racks located at each access to the Larvotto beach. Distribution will take place at the weekends in June and September (depending on weather), then every day in July and August.
In addition to this campaign, the Government has released guidelines on respecting the environment whilst at the beach and encouraging people to be eco-friendly.
- Take alternative transport (bicycles, bus, walking ...) to get to the beach.
- Do not bury any waste in the sand: bins are provided for this purpose.
- Use ashtrays made freely available by the Monaco Town Hall as part of the operation clean beach, a cigarette butt can take up to 5 years to degrade.
- Use a milk or sun cream rather than a tan oil which forms a screen at the sea surface decreasing photosynthesis essential to life.
