Le Fort Antoine dans La Ville, Monaco

18th century fort converted into a modern open air theatre

featured in Sights & sites

This fort was built in the 18th century with a beautiful promontory position overlooking the bay.

Much of it was destroyed in 1944 in the Second World War but was reconstructed at the demand of Prince Rainier III and is now a gorgeous open air theatre.

Its military architecture, watchtower and the almost total solitude which can be found there, all combine to give it a particular charm. Its stage has been pleasantly arranged with a pyramid of cannon balls at its centre. The military architecture of the fort is emphasised by the pittosporum hedges which serve as protection where there is no parapet.

Visitor comments

  • "The theatre is built in an old fort, around the theatre they have created a tiered garden. We started from the bottom and took the stairs up. There are various viewing platforms on the way. It was a great vantage point to view the iconic Monaco harbour. The theatre itself was interesting as they seem to have designed it as an ancient Greek theatre. I don't know if the do performances as there was no listings or info boards saying so." - Trip Advisor
  • "Fort Antoine was built in the early 1700's and rebuilt after being destroyed in WW2. Most cruise ships will ancho offshore in Monaco and the tender boat will drop you off right near the Fort. We walked up through the defensive positions, theater and gardens to the Prince's Palace of upper Monaco-Ville in about 30 minutes taking our time. I wouldn't suggest this route for those easily fatigued or mobility-limited- there are easier routes than this one. You can get some great views of the harbor from the theater and other ramparts." - Trip Advisor
