After tricky qualifying laps the race began on Sunday with a track slick with rain and the championship leaders lying in second and third place on the grid.

Starting in third position the defending F1 Champion, Lewis Hamilton, drove a brave race to take the lead from Red bull's Daniel Ricciardo who had started in pole position. Sadly, a bad pit stop lost him the lead and Hamilton took full advantage and defended his position for the remaining 45 laps.

Hamilton's Mercedes team mate and winner of the first four races of the 2016 season, Nico Rosberg, struggled in the difficult conditions and couldn't keep pace. After starting in second position he eventually pulled over to let Lewis Hamilton past, acknowledging that he wasn't going to be able to fight for the win.

“It's been a long time coming to get this win — not only in the season but here at the Monaco Grand Prix,” said Hamilton, whose only other Monaco win was in 2008 for McLaren. “As soon as it rained I knew there was an opportunity, and fortunately I was quick enough in the wet."

Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez joined Hamilton on the podium, while Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was fourth, ahead of McLaren's Fernando Alonso and Force India's Hulkenberg.

In the overall standings Nico Rosberg is in first position on 106 points, with team mate Hamilton just 24 points behind in second place. An unlucky Daniel Ricciardo sits in third with Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in fourth and fifth.

Monaco retains its title as one of the most exciting and sought after victories on the tour and entertained the crowds this weekend with a thrilling race featuring multiple crashes. The drivers will now make their way to Canada for the seventh Grand Prix of the season.
