Setting aside his plans for a romantic evening this year, British actor Hugh Grant has agreed to host the 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards on February 14th in Monte-Carlo.

The prestigious awards are returning to Monaco where the very first ceremony was hosted in 2000. It was there that President Mandela made his famous speech in which he said ‘sport has the power to change the world’, an idea that became the driving force of the Laureus Sport for Good movement which has improved the lives of countless young people.

Having been hosted by a string of famous faces over the years the 2017 event will be hosted by Love Actually star Hugh Grant. Known for his boyish charms and roles in films such as Four Weddings and Funeral, Notting Hill and About a Boy, he has most recently starred opposite Meryl Streep in Stephen Frears’ comedy Florence Foster Jenkins.

Hugh said: “As always this is a massive occasion for the world’s sporting community and I’m really delighted to be hosting the event, particularly in Monaco where it all started back in 2000. This isn’t just about who wins the Awards, it’s also about Laureus and its friends re-affirming their support for what Nelson Mandela said. I’m proud to be a part of that and to do what I can to help.”

The 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in the Salle des Etoiles of The Sporting Club Monte-Carlo on Tuesday 14th February.
