There was an audible gasp during the performance of the tightrope acrobats, The Gerlings, on Sunday as they took a tumble at Monte-Carlo's 41st International Circus Festival.

Amazingly the only injury was a fractured wrist after several of the acrobats fell some six metres to the floor of the arena. There was no safety net. The Gerlings, a German circus group, known for their thrilling aerial acts, posted a message of thanks on their Facebook page,

"Many thanks to all concerned for our incident happened yesterday at Monte Carlo festival! All the boys are good thank god and Douglas Gerling had an operation on my right hand and I will wait for my recovery! Thank you all for your support."

The incident occurred when an eighth troupe member tried to do a handstand on top of the last acrobat but lost his balance. It has certainly made the headlines at the Monte-Carlo Circus Festival - check out what other acts are on over the coming week.
