Chateau de Roquebrune

Visit the ancient castle perched high above the coastline

featured in Hiking & walking routes Updated

The historical town of Roccabruna fell under control of the Grimaldi family of Monaco for five centuries during which time the castle was strengthened. It still stands today and is a must see on this short walk.

In 1793 the town of Roccabruna became part of France for the first time changing its name to Roquebrune. With the completion of the coast road by Napoleon in 1804, Roquebrune became connected with the rest of the Cote d'Azur. Along this walk are many impressive buildings including the Chapel Pausa, built in the 15th century to ward off the plague that ravaged the coastline, along with the Coco Chanel property that was occupied by Sir Winston Churchill at the end of his life.

Directions

Starting at parking Cabbe near the train station Roquebrune the route follows the easterly trail along the coast following the railway line. After a short while you will take a left leading onto Avenue Virginie Herriot. At the junction take a right then the first left onto Avenue du General Leclerc. At the end of this road take a left and the first right onto the Sentier Pelissier trail leading up the hill. This trail heads towards the Chapel Pausa then St. Roch, which are well worth a visit. From the Chapel Saint-Roch head along Chemin de Menton towards the Castle and the small town of Roquebrune.

For the return follow the Cabbe Castle street that lead down to the stairs at Canon Grana. Crossing Avenue Gabriel Hanotaux and Av. de la Cote-d'Azur and taking in Sentier Massolin trail to finally lead back onto the coastal path that the route started on, that leads back to the train station.
